1A. Change the way we market South Dakota

  • The 2007 South Dakota Governor’s Conference on Tourism will take place Jan. 17-18 at the Ramkota RiverCentre in Pierre. South Dakota Tourism organizes the event and encourages all members of the state’s visitor industry to attend. This year’s theme is “Destination 2010: Follow the Signs.” The event comprises two days of expert-lead sessions, social activities and the Awards Night Gala, a Thursday evening awards dinner featuring remarks by Gov. Mike Rounds.
  • New poster images for 2007 will feature the Badlands National Park and a Missouri River bluffs. The new posters will be unveiled at the Tourism Conference. Framed versions of each will be given away in drawings Thursday evening.
  • International Media Recognition: Received copy of newspaper article printed on December 9, 2006, in Te Asahi Shimbun, Japan’s largest national newspaper. The article was written by Mr. Hiromitsu Ueki, who focused on Laura Ingalls Wilder. Mr. Ueki explained that the equivalent advertising expense of the exposure is equal to roughly $500,000 American Dollars. He was hosted by the Office of Tourism.

1C. . . .greater use of partnerships and cooperative efforts

  • The 2007 Rocky Mountain International (RMI) Roundup will be hosted by Hot Springs, Deadwood, Rapid City and the Office of Tourism in January 2007. The Office is coordinating efforts to host tour operators from all over Europe and to showcase South Dakota businesses at this promotional event.
  • Hospitality Recognition: For 2006, 612 individuals/businesses received recognition for hospitality with the Governor’s Certificate; 87 received the foil star for a second recognition; and 42 received a gold lapel pin for a third recognition. For 2006, 123 South Dakota businesses received the Great Service STAR designation for 2007.

Lodging Rates and Prices: Figures are obtained from Smith Travel Research (STR) (http://www.smithtravelresearch.com/), a firm that monitors the performance of lodging establishments throughout the U.S. Only facilities that rent nightly and have 15 or more guestrooms are monitored. Facilities that operate seasonally are monitored during the months in which they are open. STR’s South Dakota panel consists of 162 properties. The panel includes many of the larger properties in the state. The 162 facilities in STR’s panel represent 36% of the 451 lodging facilities in South Dakota that contain 15 or more rooms; the 12,138 guest rooms in the STR panel represent 53% of the 22,802 guest rooms in South Dakota lodging facilities that contain 15 or more rooms.

State Park Attendance: Statistics are estimated attendance figures obtained from the Parks and Recreation Division of the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks. They are estimates derived through such means as mechanical traffic counters and are not head-counts like those recorded by many commercial tourist attractions.

Aggregate Attractions Attendance: Aggregate attractions attendance figures are the sum of monthly attendance reported by members of the South Dakota Travel Monitoring System Attractions Panel, plus statistics on recreation visits to each of the five National Park System units in South Dakota (Badlands National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Minuteman Missile National Historic Site, Mount Rushmore National Memorial, and Wind Cave National Park).
