Presented to
Al Neuharth

(Al Neuharth was unable to attend the awards presentation.)
The A.H. Pankow Award is given to a media outlet or
individual member of the media whose coverage and promotion of the state’s
visitor industry is unparalleled.
The 2009 winner has been credited with revolutionizing the newspaper industry.
Al Neuharth is a South Dakota native who graduated from Alpena High School where he was the newspaper editor. After serving in World War II, Neuharth worked toward his degree at the University of South Dakota where he was the editor of the Volante newspaper — valuable experience he would draw upon later in his career.
After several moves and several jobs, Neuharth founded the most widely read newspaper in the country — USA Today.
Neuharth retired from the newspaper business in 1989, at the age of 65. In 1991, he founded the Freedom Forum a nonpartisan foundation dedicated to free press, free speech and free spirit for all people.
Through his work with USA Today and the Freedom Forum, Neuharth has propelled South Dakota and the tourism industry onto the national stage.
He’s an outspoken promoter of our state.
