Presented to
Mildred and Leonard Cimpl

Governor Mike Rounds presents the
2008 Ben Black Elk Award
to Mildred and Leonard Cimpl, Tabor.
The Ben Black Elk Award is presented annually to an individual or group whose
passion and enthusiasm have greatly influenced and promoted South Dakota’s
visitor industry.
Leonard and Mildred Cimpl, Tabor, have been true true advocates for one small
town’s celebration of its heritage.
The Cimpls have given their time and talent to a small town in southeastern
South Dakota all their lives. Following in their parents’ footsteps, they became
leaders of the town’s annual heritage celebration, helping to bring thousands of
visitors each year to this small community of only 417.
The event, which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, is Czech Days, held
in Tabor, South Dakota. The Cimpls coordinate the celebration’s schedules, hire
the entertainment, organize the vendors and do all of the marketing for the
event, all while being active in many civic organizations.
It has been said that the Cimpls ARE Czech Days – always in the background
making sure things run smoothly. They’ve even been called Mr. and Mrs. Tourism
for the small town of Tabor.
