The Ben Black Elk Award is presented annually to an individual or group whose passion and enthusiasm has greatly influenced South Dakota’s visitor industry. The 2006 recipient has been a true leader in promoting South Dakota. Bill Walsh was a major force in transforming not only a business but an entire community. He understands the importance of the visitor industry and he has reached celebrity status in his town. His travels to shows to promote his area as well as the state have resulted in much interest in South Dakota’s attractions. Walsh’s energy and enthusiasm benefits the state’s entire visitor industry. He marketed and continued to improve and advance an entire area that is on thousands of visitor itineraries each year. From enthralling journalists and tour operators with tales of the Old West to restoring his community, Walsh is committed to hospitality, history and education and his efforts are something that are sure to benefit the visitor industry for years to come. He made the Historic Franklin Hotel in Deadwood a national treasure, and played an integral role in restoring gaming in Deadwood in 1989. | ||
