On behalf of Aberdeen American New, the newspaper's
president and publisher, Adrian Pratt, along with Amy Pratt,
accepts the 2002 A.H. Pankow Award from First Lady
Mary Dean Janklow and Governor William J. Janklow.

The annual A.H. Pankow Award honors a member of South Dakota’s print or broadcast media whose coverage and promotion of the state’s visitor industry is unparalleled.

The history of the Aberdeen American News dates back to 1885, before South Dakota had even achieved statehood. Beginning as a two-man entrepreneurial venture, this South Dakota newspaper grew steadily, and by the 1920s, had garnered the attention of regional investors.

By 1928, a national corporation took notice and purchased the company. Seventy-four years later, that same company continues to manage this rock-solid business.

Throughout its history, the Aberdeen American News has provided coverage of statewide events and attractions, as well as being an avid supporter of tourism in northeastern South Dakota.

Aberdeen American News employs 130 local citizens and supplies nearly 17,000 readers with pertinent news and information to better their lives.

Whether focusing on business, sports or the lifestyles of South Dakotans, you can count on the Aberdeen American News for an objective view and solid recommendation on top community events and visitor attractions.

Special weekly sections such as "Out and About" and "Weekend Venture" highlight travel opportunities throughout South Dakota – stimulating travel by local residents as well as visitors to the area.

Since 1999, the "Weekend Venture" has touted South Dakota favorites such as the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo and Fort Sisseton’s Historical Festival, as well as new attractions and events like the Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls and Gregory’s Oscar Micheaux Film Festival.

In addition to presenting travel ideas, the newspaper’s staff understands the economic impact that tourism brings to the area. Coverage of hunting, conventions, tournaments and special events let readers know that these activities boost the economy of their city and the entire trade area.
