Media
Relations Activity
The Office of Tourism strongly believes in a proactive approach
to working with the media, as well as the importance of building
a strong and trusted relationship with the public. The Media &
Public Relations team works on both sides, promoting South
Dakota to both in-state and out-of-state journalists and
making sure those journalists have the information they need to
tell the story of South Dakota to our potential visitors.
Buffalo Roundup
Each year, the Media & Public Relations team invites journalists
from around the country to visit South Dakota and take in the
fascinating Buffalo Roundup. Prior to the Roundup itself, the
team escorts the journalists on a 2-day tour of western South
Dakota, giving them a taste of what the state has to offer.
This year, the tour includes a Native American cultural
experience, a close look at South Dakota’s Old West and a tour
through some of the state’s most breathtaking countryside.
Digital PR Strategy
In an effort to better understand the social networking
community and what’s being said about South Dakota in online
discussion, the Media & Public Relations team will begin
monitoring several of the top travel blogs and discussion
forums. This will not only aid the office in tracking what’s
being said, but also will give us a chance to respond to comments
when appropriate, answer consumer questions regarding South
Dakota and post our own travel ideas, stories and information
about South Dakota to a network of people specifically
interested in travel.
National Treasure: Book of Secrets
In conjunction with the December 21 premiere of National
Treasure: Book of Secrets, which was partially filmed in South
Dakota, the Media & Public Relations team will lead an effort to
create public buzz and excitement. The efforts will include a
page on www.TravelSD.com
devoted to providing information about the film and the filming
location sites in South Dakota.
Industry Releases on MediaSD.com
The Office of Tourism continues to post visitor industry press
releases on www.MediaSD.com. It’s all part of an effort to help
the industry spread the message about South Dakota’s plentiful
attractions and destinations. For posting, send your releases to
mediasd@state.sd.us.
